Engineering graduates of Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 are eligible to be inducted in the upcoming Order of the Engineer ceremony, happening on May 6 at 3 p.m. in the Student Union multipurpose room. This is a chance for students to dedicate themselves to the ethical and fair practice of engineering, receiving a ring to remind themselves of their commitment. Earlier this month, the National Science Foundation awarded nearly $2.5 million for scholarships and student support services to California State University, Bakersfield’s School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering.“S-STEM: Providing Aid for STEM Success,” or PASS, is a six-year grant that aims to improve retention and degree completion of STEM majors by providing scholarships for low-income, academically talented NSME students with unmet financial need. The “last-mile” scholarships will award however much additional help an S-STEM scholar needs after financial aid and other scholarships and grants, up to $15,000 a year.Learn more about the grant (and how to apply!) at the link!

The California Energy Research Center (CERC) at California State University, Bakersfield will host its third annual Carbon Management and Energy Innovation Technical Symposium tomorrow, April 12. Experts from academia, industry and government will join to talk about issues and opportunities related to carbon and energy.“Once again this year, we have organized an exciting, diverse array of speakers and panelists to address carbon management issues and energy innovations of importance to the Central Valley and beyond,” said organizer Dr. Anthony Rathburn, interim CERC director and CSUB professor of geology.In-person attendance is by invitation only, but a live webinar is free and open to the public. TODAY: Please join the Kegley Institute of Ethics and the California Energy Research Center in the Dezember Reading Room at 6 p.m. for a conversation on "Solar Farms, Community and Ecology." Panelists Devon Muto of EDF Renewables, Emma De La Rosa of the Leadership Council for Justice and Accountability and NSME's own Dr. Antje Lauer (Biology) will discuss the community and environmental impacts of Kern County becoming a national leader in large-scale solar. Today we welcomed students admitted for the fall semester for CSUB's second annual Future `Runner Day! In addition to great information prospective students got about CSUB throughout the day, our future NSME students also got to tour our buildings, see fun demonstrations and meet with our faculty, advisors and staff! Dr. Matthew Herman, assistant professor of geology, was a guest on “Inside Politics with Dana Bash” to discuss the 4.8 magnitude earthquake in New Jersey on Friday. Dr. Herman told Bash that “we definitely should expect some aftershocks in the next few days.” Typically, the aftershocks are smaller but there is a small chance of a bigger earthquake later, Dr. Herman said.
