| NoProxy Member 2002-Aug-25 2:15 pm I'm down in South Jersey after stormHello all, Anyone in SJ Pleasantville/Egg Harbor area down??? I have been down since the storm last night, I have solid lights on receive/send/online on my surfboard but no activity light....I have called tech went through the motions, release renew/unplug...etc..Shows I'm online but can't pull an IP, no communications from DHCP server...I just wanted to see if anyone in South Jersey near Atlantic City are up and running??? Also can my modem be the culprit from a surge, (it happened in the storm last night) I would think if that was the case I would not be able to Sync up? And if it was my nic, I would still see the activity light blink, So it's either my modem or Comcast I guess. Good thing I got my dialup as backup. |

njkris | njkris Member 2002-Aug-25 2:26 pm ill bet money on it that it is comcast. save that ticket number where you were down and get a tech to your house. until you are back up keep that number. when you are back up call up comcast. they will credit you 1.50 per day. try unhooking your modem for like 10 minutes. if you are on a router, go to »192.168.100.1 and go to the page with the restart to factory settings (since ya got a surfboard) and wait 10 minutes. |

rody_40 | rody_40 to NoProxy Member 2002-Aug-25 4:45 pm actually i would not be surprised at all if he got a little surge. either his modem or netcard or both is history. the reason i started unplugging during storms the same thing happened to me. it took my router and modem to the final resting place. if they are seeing it online just not drawing a ip. i would think you lost one or the other |

| Murphdog856 to NoProxy Member 2002-Aug-25 6:38 pm I know that the Comcast that is based in Cherry Hill may of had problems because a large chunk of town was without power for over 12 hrs. Overnight I saw comcast at a few poles with portable generators keeping things working. |

| NoProxy to rody_40 Member 2002-Aug-25 6:57 pm Thanks everyone for all the info, helps a lot, I am starting to think it's my modem, I just thought since I was able to get sync, it was comcast's problem, It did happen at the exact same time when my cable box went out and I did hear a snap or pop, but sounded like it was away from the computer, maybe not. rody_40 thanks for letting me know you had the same problem, being able to sync, and just not drawing an IP, made me think my modem was fine, never thought it would sync if my modem was hit. Does anyone know an easy way to trouble shoot and find out if was my modem, nic or both?? I am thinking the modem since the activity light does not blink even when comcast pushes data to it. I hate to go buy a new modem and find out its the nic or vise versa..but maybe I'll upgrade to the surfboard 4200. |

| jb Premium Member 2002-Aug-25 7:47 pm You can pick up a NIC locally for about $15. That is a lot cheaper then buying a new modem and finding out that was not the problem. |

| NoProxy Member 2002-Aug-25 11:59 pm Thanks lmilone, I know we use the same server, And to think Comcast tech could not tell me the DHCP server was OK. One tech said there was an outage. Good thing you guys I here to help:) Maybe I will try the USB connection to check to see if it's the nic or the Modem. If it works with the USB then it's the nic card. |

rody_40 | rody_40 to NoProxy Member 2002-Aug-26 12:21 am i know the way i found out. first i had a laptop that wasnt connected at the time which made it easy for me. unhooked router and still couldnt connect with direct connect. then i replaced my modem and could connect without router and not with. replaced router and everything was fine. in my case it didnt get to my netcards, but i think that might have been due to having a router in the mix. there really was no doubt that it took both my modem and router out. but i also had 4 computers hooked up at the time and it didnt get any of them. probably one of the few times it is a disadvantage to having a surfboard. since they have no lan light. i would make sure i checked the ground at the ground block to make sure you have a good tight connection where it enters the house. you usually should have a cable guy come and check your line feeding your house as you usually can see when it gets spiked hard on the line that could also cause problems after you get back online |

| NoProxy Member 2002-Aug-26 6:57 pm A BIG THANKS TO EVERYONE!! I am back and running better than ever!! It was my NIC card that was hit by a surge, it passed through my cable line through my Modem right to my NIC and it went, amazingly my modem is fine. To troubleshoot, I just downloaded the USB files and plugged in a USB cable and bingo! Last time I leave my cable line plugged during a storm! And I will need to check my cable grounds too. I was very very lucky, could have caused major problems, I'm glad the NIC took the hit, only $20 out:) I'll stick with the USB for a few weeks, but I need to get a new NIC card whats the best? any to avoid? I had a 3com. |

FAQs
Does weather affect Xfinity? ›
We're committed to keeping you connected.
Typically, during severe weather conditions, the two biggest impacts are commercial power outages and damage to our network. We work around the clock and use all our resources to restore services as quickly and as safely as possible.
Are Xfinity and Comcast the same thing? At their roots, Xfinity and Comcast are the same thing. Comcast is the parent company, and Xfinity is Comcast's brand for TV, internet, and home phone services.
How do I check my Comcast internet? ›To use the Xfinity Speed Test, go to speedtest.xfinity.com using your desktop or handheld device's browser and select Start Test. The Xfinity Speed Test is also available in the Xfinity app (Apple App Store or Google Play) for some Xfinity Internet customers.
How long until Xfinity comes back on? ›Xfinity TV and Xfinity Internet services take approximately one hour to restore. Xfinity Voice service takes approximately four hours to restore.
Can weather cause internet outages? ›Weather culprits include thunderstorms, heavy rain, snow, and extreme temperatures. Each condition impacts fiber internet in various ways, such as lightning strikes, water damage, snow weighing down poles, and physical harm to fiber optic cables. These factors can trigger significant internet disruptions.
Can weather affect cable connection? ›Wired connections are still susceptible to damage. “Severe weather events, such as flooding or hurricanes, can damage underground or overhead cables,” says Kubarycz. “Extreme temperatures, either too hot or too cold, can also affect the integrity of cables over time, potentially causing them to degrade or break.”
Why is my WiFi not working on Xfinity? ›Check the device WiFi settings to ensure WiFi is on. Confirm the equipment cables are plugged in and the coaxial cable has been tightened as much as possible using your fingers to both the wall outlet and your modem or gateway. Make sure you are within a reachable WiFi coverage area from the modem or router.
How do I test my Comcast signal? ›To see if the Full Network Test is available to you, go to the Xfinity app, select WiFi, select View WiFi equipment and then select Internet Health. If you see a Full Network Test tile, then you're good to go.
Why can't I get Comcast in my area? ›If we've never provided service to your address before, construction may be needed to extend our physical network to service your address. Even if your address is within 300 feet of our physical network, construction may still be required to route our service line to follow utility easem*nts or right of ways.
