I use a basic Sunbeam 2 pound bread maker-I know there are much fancier versions than the one I have, but this guy has been around for almost 4 years now, working pretty hard for my family, and I don’t have a complaint yet!

Check out the reviews for yourself over on amazon. I really think this bread maker is the best one you can get at this price point.

I purchased mine on amazon, but I frequent the thrift stores often and have seen it for sale locally for around $20 gently used (because lets be honest-how many people actually use their bread makers right!?). Well, after you see how easy it is to make your own VEGAN bread at home, I can bet you will be using yours more often!!

The recipe I’ve adapted over time was originally inspired from the book “300 Best Canadian Bread Machine Recipes” by Donna Washburn and Heather Butt. There are a few vegan recipes in the book, and many gluten free ones, but the recipe I’ve made was inspired by their “All Occasion White Bread”.

I’ve veganized other recipes from this book as well! You can find many more vegan bread maker recipes over on my other blog Baking Vegan Bread. This site is dedicated entirely to vegan bread recipes, tips, tricks and tools!

Why My Easy Basic Vegan Bread Recipe is Great

Well, as the title suggests-its pretty easy guys! You will save a ton of money making your own instead of purchasing bread from the store-especially if you are used to buying organic, or specially made vegan bread! My loaf works out to around 30 cents a loaf!

If you aren’t buying organic bread then you are most likely buying bread that has a ton of added preservatives and other little nasties that most people want to avoid.

Funny story about that…

When Adam and I had our son I wanted to make things as easy for us as possible around the home as we adjusted to our newest little one. I decided to purchase the same variety of bread we used to go with before making the switch to home made.

Honestly, my tastes sure have changed-I think I got spoiled from the freshness of our home made vegan bread! The store bought bread (and I did try a few different varieties) all had a strange sour taste to it. Totally grossed me out!

Ingredients for Home Made Vegan Bread

These ingredients you most likely already have on hand. If you enjoy making your own bread at home, I would suggest buying in bulk. You can save even more money this way!

  • All Purpose Flour
  • Ground Flax Seed (the whole seed will not work, it must be ground)
  • Granulated Sugar
  • Bread Machine Yeast. Bread machine yeast is finer than traditional yeast and breaks down more easily in the bread maker. Be sure you use yeast made for the bread machine. It also goes by “Instant Yeast”.
  • Oil. I just used canola oil, but any neutral tasting oil will work
  • Plant milk. I like to use Silk Soy Milk. It’s extra creamy.
  • Salt
  • Water

Is Home Made Bread Healthy?

I am not an expert in nutrition but I can tell you that according to the Canada Food Guide it is recommended that people, “Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits, whole grain foods and protein foods. Choose protein foods that come from plants more often.

This home made vegan bread maker recipe does contain oil and refined flour. But, being home made eliminates a whole host of other additives and preservatives often found in store bought white bread.

This vegan bread recipe also contains ground flax, which is a great way to add healthy omega 3 fatty acids into your diet.

To up the fiber and nutrition of home made bread, switch out the all purpose flour for a whole wheat like I’ve done here in my Homestyle 100% Whole Wheat Vegan Bread.

So, If I’ve convinced you to give it a go here’s how to put it all together!

Ingredients

Ingredients Check:

  • 1 1/2cupswater
  • 1/3 cupSilk Soy Original
  • 2tbspgranulated sugar
  • 2 tbspcanola oil
  • 1 1/2tspsalt
  • 3 1/2cupsall purpose flour
  • 1/4cupground flax seeds
  • 1 1/2tspbread machine yeast

Instructions

The Nitty Gritty:

  1. Add all of your ingredients to your bread machine in the order listed by the manufacturer.

  2. Place insert into the machine and select “basic cycle” for a 2 pound loaf

  3. Some machines have an option to select crust colour-I always choose “medium brown”

  4. Once the machine is done (mine takes around 3 hours) carefully remove the insert from the machine and turn the loaf out onto a cooling rack.

  5. If you can hold yourself back from slicing it right away (we can never do that!!!) Then It’s best to wait until the loaf is fully cooled before slicing. The structure of the loaf will be compromised with it still being hot-making for a squished loaf while slicing (but honestly, squished or not-it’s so worth it for the warm slice of fresh bread slathered with vegan butter!)

  6. Once cooled, slice your loaf lengthwise into two smaller loaves. Now cut these loaves into slices of bread.

  7. I like to cut all of my bread at once so the kids and the rest of the family have easy access to it, and to contain the mess of all the crumbs from constant slicing!

Recipe Notes

  • You can substitute the Silk Soy milk with your favourite non-dairy milk
  • In Canada All-purpose flour works perfect due to the gluten content for bread-no need to purchase “bread flour”
  • Yeast made for the bread machine has smaller granules and will dissolve and do its thing more readily than traditional yeast (which needs to be dissolved in liquid prior to adding to a recipe). Be sure you are using bread machine yeast, otherwise known as instant yeast.

For our family of 6 (with my youngest not yet eating any bread) we tend to go through one recipe about every day and a half to two days, depending on what meals we are having. Often the girls will have toast for breakfast with oatmeal. Sometimes they will have a good old PB & J for lunch or a veggie ham sandwich. And, a lot of the time they love snacking on toast and fruit and veggies as well, so it goes pretty quick in our house.

How to Store Home Made Bread

I store my bread in a large ziploc storage bag and I leave it on the counter. It will stay fresh like this for up to 3 days.

If you need a little more time, simply throw it in the freezer.

How to Freeze Home Made Bread

If you have a smaller family or just don’t eat as much bread this recipe freezes great! Simply wait until your bread has completely cooled, slice it and freeze half in a freezer bag. This makes it super convenient if you only want to toast up a couple slices rather than having to defrost the whole loaf to slice it!

FAQs

What is the order of ingredients for a bread machine? ›

Adding Ingredients to the Bread Machine

Manufacturers usually recommend adding the liquids first, followed by dry ingredients, with the yeast going in last. This keeps the yeast away from the liquid ingredients until kneading begins.

How long does vegan bread last? ›

If you keep your bread on the counter like we do, it will last about 4 days before it starts to dry out and get stale. I store my bread in a large Ziploc storage bag that I reuse when I make a new loaf. You can place this bread in the fridge to make it last longer-up to a week.

Is active dry yeast the same as bread machine yeast? ›

When determining the difference between bread machine yeast vs. active dry yeast, the main distinction is that active dry yeast must be proofed using a warm liquid before use, whereas bread machine yeast can be mixed directly into the bread dough.

How much instant yeast do you put in a bread machine? ›

  1. 2/3 cup (152g) lukewarm water.
  2. 1/4 cup (57g) lukewarm milk.
  3. 2 tablespoons (28g) butter.
  4. 2 1/2 cups (300g) King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour.
  5. 5 teaspoons granulated sugar.
  6. 1 1/4 teaspoons (8g) table salt.
  7. 1 teaspoon active dry yeast or instant yeast.

What flour is best for bread machine? ›

Most bread machine manuals and cookbooks call for bread flour rather than all-purpose flour. King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour, because it's higher in gluten than national brands of all-purpose flour, works perfectly in the bread machine.

Can active dry yeast be used in bread machine? ›

Bread machine yeast and rapid-rise yeast are specially formulated for the bread machine and become active more quickly than active dry yeast. You can use active dry yeast in your bread machine, but it should be dissolved in water before being used.

Does vegan bread have yeast? ›

Even though yeast is vegan, that doesn't necessarily mean that all types of bread are vegan. Lean breads, which are made with nothing but flour, salt and yeast, are fine. Some bread recipes call for a small amount of sugar, and some richer breads might have a bit of oil in them. These are all fine as well.

What is the difference between vegan bread and regular bread? ›

It's usually straightforward to tell whether a bread is vegan. You can easily distinguish vegan from non-vegan bread by looking at the ingredient list. Bread containing eggs, honey, royal jelly, gelatin, or dairy-based ingredients like milk, butter, buttermilk, whey, or casein isn't considered vegan.

Why is dry milk used in bread? ›

High-heat nonfat milk powder is processed at a higher temperature, which means it has a higher denatured protein content. High-heat milk powder also has a sweeter, slightly more caramelized flavor. The added sweetness and protein helps bread dough rise—particularly enriched dough like brioche.

What is the best yeast for a bread machine? ›

In fact, these types of yeast are commonly used in bread machine recipes. Both commercial dry yeast and instant yeast are suitable for bread machines because they are designed to be added directly to the dry ingredients, and they don't require proofing in water before use.

Why did my bread not rise in bread machine? ›

Your bread machine is probably killing your yeast with too much heat. You could mix flour and water and a little bit of yeast and put that in the refrigerator and your dough would rise eventually. If your “bread” is a brick, your yeast is dead.

Can I use regular flour instead of bread flour? ›

You can always substitute all-purpose flour for bread flour one for one in any recipe that calls for it. Your bread might not raise quite as high or have quite as much chew, if you are using all-purpose flour, but it will still be delicious and homemade and all the good things.

Can you use Fleischmann's yeast in bread machine? ›

Fleishmann's markets bread machine yeast, active dry yeast, rapid-rise dry yeast, fresh active yeast, and pizza dough yeast. You can use any of these to make bread.

What happens if I use too much yeast in bread machine? ›

The slower the process the more byproducts the better the dough. If you add too much yeast this process will be very fast and your dough will not be as good. It will lack in flavor and you risk a flat bread because the structure of your dough won't be as stable.

What happens if you put too much yeast in bread machine? ›

The bread is full of holes, and/or the texture is coarse. Yeast feast on sugars. If you add more yeast than what is needed, you will raise the dough too fast but with less flavor. After all the sugars are consumed they will die.

Do you put liquids or solids first in bread machine? ›

Be sure to put the ingredients in your machine with liquids first, flour second, then salt, then sweetener, then yeast. Remove the dough when the dough cycle is done, form it into a loaf or rolls, let rise till doubled.

Do you put liquid or solid first in bread machine? ›

It depends. Some instructions tell you to put wet ingredients in first, followed by dry ingredients. Others suggest you put the flour in, followed by salt and sugar, then wet ingredients, and finally the yeast. Almost all recipes will suggest you add the yeast last, otherwise, the dough won't rise quite as well.

Do you put water or flour in breadmaker first? ›

By putting the yeast in first and the water in after the flour, this ensures that the yeast does not become active too soon. The flour is acting as a barrier.

In what order do you put ingredients in a Panasonic bread machine? ›

In the Panasonic, the yeast goes in first, then the dry ingredients and then you pour the water into the side of the pan.
